I know many tourists visit north of Montenegro, once they had enough of high coastal temperatures. A place I like the best in Montenegro, besides Durmitor, is Perast. Many compared it with Dubrovnik, but Perast gives a completely different experience. When comparing Perast and Dubrovnik, both have their unique charm and attractions. Here are several reasons why some might consider Perast to be better than Dubrovnik:

1. Quieter Atmosphere

  • Description: Perast is a small coastal town, which means it has a more tranquil and relaxed ambiance compared to the bustling streets of Dubrovnik.
  • Benefit: Visitors can enjoy a peaceful experience, making it ideal for those seeking a getaway from the crowds.

2. Stunning Views

  • Description: Perast offers breathtaking views of the Bay of Kotor, with its picturesque islands, particularly Our Lady of the Rocks.
  • Benefit: The scenic beauty is often less commercialized, allowing for a more authentic appreciation of the landscape.

3. Rich History in a Compact Area

  • Description: Perast is home to numerous historical sites, such as baroque churches and old palaces, all within walking distance.
  • Benefit: Visitors can explore the town’s rich history without the need for extensive travel or navigation through large crowds.

4. Unique Cultural Experience

  • Description: The town has a distinct Montenegrin culture, evident in its architecture, cuisine, and local traditions.
  • Benefit: Travelers can enjoy a more authentic experience of Montenegro, away from the heavily touristed areas of Croatia.

5. Access to Islands

  • Description: Perast serves as a gateway to the nearby islands of Our Lady of the Rocks and St. George.
  • Benefit: Visitors can easily take boat trips to these beautiful sites, enriching their experience with unique excursions. These are 5 minute rides.

6. Less Commercialization

  • Description: Unlike Dubrovnik, which has become a major tourist hub with many shops and restaurants catering to tourists, Perast retains a more local feel.
  • Benefit: This allows for a more genuine experience of Montenegrin hospitality and culture.

7. Easier Navigation

  • Description: Perast is small and easy to navigate, making it perfect for leisurely strolls.
  • Benefit: Visitors can explore at their own pace without the stress of navigating large crowds or complex street layouts.

8. Culinary Delights

  • Description: Perast offers delicious local seafood and traditional Montenegrin dishes in charming waterfront restaurants. Restaurant Conte is probably one the most popular.
  • Benefit: Dining in Perast can be a more intimate and enjoyable experience compared to the often crowded eateries in Dubrovnik.
