Trail Description

Starting the Hike

The adventure begins at the Sedlo Pass, a well-known spot with small parking and an entrance fee station for the national park. From here, the trail heads north, gradually ascending across grassy meadows, following a distinct shepherd’s path.

The Path to Surutka

As you progress, the trail leads you beneath the towering cliffs of Uvite Grede, skirting the edge of rocky slopes. You’ll encounter a steep rock section that requires some hand assistance—this is the most significant challenge before reaching the beautiful Surutka valley, surrounded by the stunning peaks of Uvite Grede, Šljeme, Bandijerna, Zubaca, and Vjetrenih Brda.

Bobotov Kuk looms majestically in the distance, offering a preview of the grandeur that awaits.

From Surutka to Zeleni Vir

Continuing for about 1.5 km through grassy terrain, you will arrive at Surutka, where you’ll find a sign indicating a drinking water source. The next segment from Surutka to Zeleni Vir is relatively easy, with a gentle ascent leading you to a viewpoint that offers fantastic views of the Šarene Pasove and Samar, as well as Bobotov Kuk itself.

The trail then descends over 100 m to Zeleni Vir (2,028 m), a small lake that may be dry during the summer months.

The Ascent to Bobotov Kuk

From Zeleni Vir, the real climb begins. The first section to Velika Previja (2,351 m) is steep and demanding, involving a mix of scree, rocky surfaces, and grassy slopes. Upon reaching Velika Previja, you will connect with the marked trail coming from Crno Jezero.

Final Push to the Summit

The last leg of the ascent to Bobotov Kuk involves approximately 170 m of elevation gain. This section is unique, characterized by large boulders and rocky terrain. The trail veers left beneath the cliffs, leading you to another pass between Bobotov Kuk and the neighboring peak, Đevojka – Soa Nebeska. This area serves as a fantastic viewpoint overlooking the Škrčka Lakes and the Škrka Valley.

Continuing toward the summit, the narrow path winds along exposed cliffs, requiring extra caution (there’s often a cable for assistance). This is the most precarious part of the hike!

At the Summit

The summit of Bobotov Kuk is a rocky outcrop with limited space, covered in stones shaped by the elements. The panoramic views are absolutely breathtaking.

  • Southern Views: Bandijerna, Šljeme, Zubci, Sedlena Greda, and more.
  • Western Views: Đevojka, Šareni Pasovi, Prutaš, Maglić.
  • Northern Views: Bezimeni vrh, Crvena Greda, and the Tara Canyon.
  • Eastern Views: Žabljak plateau and surrounding peaks.

Alternative Routes

If you’re looking for variety, Bobotov Kuk can also be approached from three other directions:

  1. Northeast: Via Velika Previja from Crno Jezero
  2. Northwest: From Škrčka Lakes through Šarene Pasove (Samar) to Zeleni Vir
  3. From Dobri Do: Across Urden and Mliječni Do to Zeleni Vir, then up to the summit via the same route. Happy hiking.
