Let me start this post by saying how Durmitor National Park is our preffered place in Montenegro. And you can learn more about it by using our Durmitor Visitor Guide. With that being said, check out some of other stunning places in Montenegro.
Prokletije National Park: Montenegro’s Wild Frontier
Often referred to as the “Accursed Mountains,” Prokletije National Park is a haven for those seeking untamed wilderness. Located in the country’s southeastern corner, this park boasts jagged peaks that seem to pierce the sky, offering some of the most challenging and rewarding hiking trails in the Balkans.
The park is also home to vibrant biodiversity, including rare plant species and elusive wildlife like lynxes and golden eagles. The alpine meadows, dotted with wildflowers in spring and summer, create a striking contrast against the rocky backdrop, making it a photographer’s dream.
Biogradska Gora National Park: A Pristine Rainforest
Home to one of Europe’s last remaining primeval rainforests, Biogradska Gora National Park is a sanctuary of biodiversity. Located in central Montenegro, the park features Biogradsko Lake, a mirror-like body of water surrounded by towering trees that have stood for centuries.
Visitors can explore well-marked trails that weave through ancient woodlands, where the air is rich with the scent of earth and moss. Birdwatchers and nature photographers will find endless opportunities to capture rare species in their natural habitat.
Lake Skadar National Park: A Wetland Paradise
Lake Skadar National Park straddles the border between Montenegro and Albania, offering an enchanting mix of wetlands, open water, and rugged hills. This park is a haven for birdlife, hosting over 280 species, including the iconic Dalmatian pelican. The lake’s vast expanse is ideal for boat tours, which take visitors past quaint fishing villages and secluded monasteries.
Lake Skadar’s surroundings are dotted with vineyards and olive groves, making it a perfect destination for combining nature exploration with culinary delights. Don’t miss the opportunity to sample locally produced wine and olive oil.
Lovćen National Park: A Historical and Natural Marvel
Lovćen National Park, located near the Adriatic coast, is a fusion of cultural heritage and stunning scenery. The park’s crown jewel is the mausoleum of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, perched atop Mount Lovćen, offering panoramic views that stretch from the mountains to the sea.
Our Opinion
Montenegro’s national parks are a testament to the country’s extraordinary natural diversity. Each park offers a unique experience. From the rugged wilderness of Prokletije to the ancient forests of Biogradska Gora. Also do not forget the wetland wonder of Lake Skadar, and the historical charm of Lovćen. Since you are here I know you’re seeking adventure, tranquility, and a deeper connection with nature. Montenegro’s parks provide an unforgettable journey into some of nature’s best-kept secrets.
You can probably visit each of these parks in a couple of days, but to better get to know them, my advice is to come back each summer and learn new paths and baways of our parks.
