Region of Kotor: A Timeless Jewel

Start your exploration in Kotor, a historic town set within the enchanting Bay of Kotor. During its rich history the city has been an important trade and maritime center. It has been ruled by Illyrians, Romans, Hungarians, Medieval Serbia, Venetians, French and Austrians.

Its labyrinthine streets, charming squares, and well-preserved medieval architecture make it a must-visit destination. The fortress of San Giovanni offers panoramic views that are worth every step of the climb.

And, if you are into history and not just regular touristy thing, make a visit to The historic Archive of Kotor which is located in Trg Sv. Tripuna Square, nestled within the walled city of Koto. This building contains a wealth of historical documents and artifacts that showcase the country’s heritage.

The first document of the Archives is from the year 1309. Ever since the year 1309, up to the present days, the archival material has been grouped within 237 record groups and 40 collections of documents, with the total length of 1300 meters. Through the documents from these record groups and collections it is possible to make researches from various fields of human activity within the Bay of Kotor region.

Durmitor National Park: A Natural Marvel

Durmitor National Park, with its deep canyons, glacial lakes, and dense forests, is a UNESCO-listed natural wonder. The Tara River Canyon, the deepest canyon in Europe, is perfect for adrenaline seekers looking for rafting adventures. Durmitor represents an exceptional natural value and a lasting inspiration for scientists and nature lovers. It has united true rarities of nature, such as the forests of black pine at the site of Crna Poda, whose grandiose trees, reaching up to 50 meters in height, withstand the test of time for a full 400 years.

The Historic Region of Cetinje and Lovćen

This region is home to the old royal capital, Cetinje, and the dramatic Lovćen mountain range. Visit the Cetinje Monastery to uncover its spiritual legacy or climb to the Njegoš Mausoleum for unparalleled views stretching to the Adriatic. I remember when I was a student at The College of Tourism there was a question I needed to know the answer to: How many steps are there to Njegoš’s mausoleum? Well, I do know now that there are 461 steps leading up there. So, if you like steps this is a perfect place for you 🙂

The journey through Lovćen National Park is an experience in itself, filled with winding roads and scenic vistas.

Stećci: Medieval Tombstones Graveyards

The lesser-known but equally fascinating Stećci are medieval tombstones scattered in several locations in Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia and Montenegro- including Žabljak and Plužine. These unique and intricately carved stones provide a glimpse into the medieval Balkans’ mysterious past. Head over to Stećci website for more detailed info.
